PTL!

We left a 7:45am for ASELSI to have praise and worship followed by devotions with the department heads. Phillip shared some ideas about what makes a balanced church or ministry. It seemed very well received and appreciated.

We then divided and conquered our next tasks. Some continued work on the fence/wall around the widows while others helped prepare for the Alumni luncheon. We help host close to 75 students of ILIO Bible College for them to have a time of encouragement and fellowship. Pastor Phillip preached with Carlos translating. Serving them fried chicken, cole slaw, and watermelon, we felt right at home! The rest of the afternoon we spent on our work projects.

We have many wonderful stories to share.

Please keep us in your prayers.

.

Tuesday May 12

We began our day with a candlelight breakfast - still no electricity! We are eating better than at home - things like french toast and fresh pineapple!

We left the hotel by 8am to head to ASELSI and our work projects. Phillip spent from 8:30 until 2pm teaching students about Israel and how it relates to the Church and how to understand its history. The teaching was video taped to use in their future curriculum.

After another wonderful lunch at ASELSI, we changed clothes for visits to 4 different local homes. As we were sitting and having devotions on Monday evening, lighting hit our hotel electrical service. We have not had electricity since and have had all our meals by candle light. So romantic!

This Monday morning, we began our day with a visit to a local school. Approximately 150 students k-8 joined us for an assembly. With the help of Claudia and Richard from ASELSI, we led them in worship and fun, interactive songs. We then presented two skits, sharing the gospel. One skit was western in theme and helped the children understand how God's good conquers evil. Our team enthusiastically dressed the part and conveyed their message to much applause! We had prepared crafts, which went along with our presentation. The children enjoyed coloring and decorating the crafts - the glitter glue was something they had never seen (even the adults) and was a big hit. WOC Small Groups donated large amounts of school supplies, which the team packed into WOC logo canvas bags for the teachers. These gifts of love really made an impact on their hearts. We also handed out candy and lots of hugs.

Later, we had lunch at ASELSI with Claudia sharing about ILIO - the training program that takes place on site at ASELSI in Chichi. Following Lunch we started our two work projects. One is building a fence around the property where two widows live at ASELSI. The other project is building a bathroom-kitchen combo for a family that has nothing but a hose pipe. We ended the day after a nice meal together celebrating God's mercy towards all of us, even without electricity!

We Have Arrived!

We made it safely and on time to Guatemala City. It was not raining, which was a real blessing. Because of the size of our group, we could not fit into the vans as in past trips, so we had our own "Chicken Bus" - the common means of transportation here in the hills of Guatemala. It started raining, making our 4-hour drive up into the mountains on narrow, hairpin curved roads that much more exciting. We arrived in time to get a hot meal, followed by a brief meeting with Sharon Harvey who laid out the game plan and some rules that would do us well to follow.

We awoke to clear skies and warm weather. After a wonderful breakfast here at our accomodation, Casa del Ray, we went to the market in town. The market is one of the largest in Guatemala and people come from all over the country to sell and buy their goods. After a few hours of shopping, we had lunch in a local restaurant - pizza was the food of choice. Afterward, we returned to the hotel for a quick change and then departed for trip to a local church. Phillip shared a sermon on forgiveness and the whole group sang before the sermon was given. The local church celebrated Mothers Day and we joined right in on the action!

The church is about an hour away from where we are staying in the state capital "Chiche", a town just about the size of Chichi. Opportunities will fill their week - hospital visits, construction projects, local village home visits, and much more. Additionally, Pastor Phillip Jackson has been requested to teach ASELSI-ILIO Bible College students and staff on "The Importance of Israel".

Thanks to the outpouring of generosity from WOC Small Groups, a local elementary school and business, the May 2009 team members' arms will be continually filled with gifts for those they meet at every turn. From crayons and coloring books to toothpaste and stuffed animals, many hearts will be touched through our gifts. Gozer, our lovable gator-friend from WOC Children's Ministry, is also returning for his third trip to Guatemala. Let us catch up on our journey. We left the Church at 3:30am and arrived at our hotel in ChiChi at 9:30 central time. To say we rested well after a quick meal would be an understatement. We joined the local missionaries for an English service. Pastor Phillip gave the sermon and seemed to be well received. After services we went to town for their market day. As we walked from the Hotel and experienced the rain first hand. We made a quick stop at the only grocery store in town and many bought unbrellas. With it reaining we went to a local resturant and had lunch. Pizza was the meal of choice! Some did a little quick shopping before returning to the hotel. We left at 4:30 to go to a local service. It was in spanish. The people worshiped the Lord for an hour and then Pastor Phillip shared a message that was well received. The entire team prayer for the congregation as the individual came forward for prayer. It ended with everyone felling like God had been present. After Service we returned to the Hotel "Casa Del Ray" House of the King for a late diner followed with fellowship and a night of wonderful rest.
Today we went to ASELSI for a work and ministry day! Some of the team worked on helping Suki and Mary Jane prepare the intern house. Some worked on preparing the area to pour a concrete floor for the pavilion that lunch is feed to people under on the compound at ASELSI. Late in the afternoon we divided into 3 groups and took food and toys etc to 3 families. The largest home had 2 room. Can you imagine 9 people in 2 8x8 rooms? Kitchen and all! This 11-person, 1-alligator (our own Gozer!) team began their journey in full anticipation of all the amazing things God will do in World Outreach Church’s continued work with ASELSI Ministries in Chichicastenago, Guatemala.

They carried in tow 12 duffel bags full of treasures for the Quiché Indian peoples to whom they will minister over the next nine days. WOC Small Groups contributed the lion’s share of toys, candy, coloring books & crayons, bubbles, and hospital necessities, all of which will be expressions the Lord’s love and compassion to hundreds. A local company generously donated new tools which will help our team construct new roofing on dwellings and complete several other major work projects. In addition, almost 200 Derek Prince books will be placed into the hands of present and future pastors-in-training - what a privilege.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp3.blogger.com/_aWKnCfoT3PA/SB3lEwiJjcI/AAAAAAAAAHg/JIORcRhbXpw/s320/IMG_1188.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5196561414965792194" />

Stay posted daily for updates from our team. Matt Brand was so good to get up and be at the church at 2:30 am to take us. We were over loaded with bags. We even paid to take and extra bag so we didn't leave anything behind. We had been asked to take paintball pellets for some of the missionary kids. They were liquid and we weren't supposed to get them through. I started to divide them up into 11 zip lock bags and the head security guy let us take them as they were. God is good and we have some stories to tell of how God is watching over us but will do that when I am not standing at a checkin counter to use the power. The pictures are at 5:oo am at the Nashville airport. We were the first in line at the new Starbuck that has opened up on the concourse. Our last chance to taste civilization. Please pray for Frank's back. He has mucsle tightness and is very uncomforatable. It happen this morning as we was getting ready. We will keep you posted. Gozer is having a great time so look at his blog as well. Our flight out of Miami says it on time and we are trusting it is. This day was made of some intimate personal ministry to the people of Chichicastenango. Pastor Phillip spent most of the day training and ministering to ASELSI Bible students (go to the ASELSI website for more details on the Bible training opportunities available for pastors and lay ministers through their organization). Through Pastor’s teaching and the work of the Holy Spirit, these students not only received spiritual freedom for themselves, but they were empowered to go back to their congregation and teach the freedom that comes through the Cross of Jesus Christ!

Our construction team had a long, hard day! However, the payoff was well worth the investment. We finished a project from earlier in the week, laying brick for a garden at the ASELSI base. The joy (lol) of the day was the three holes that we dug for palm trees – 3’ x 3’ x 3’. Really, the heart of the day for the construction team came by putting a new roof on the home of a wonderful woman – a single mother with eight (8) children. The oldest, a 16-year old boy, goes to school and works to put some of the younger children in school. She still does not have the resources to put the youngest children in school, but we are praying! It blessed the family so much to have their leaky roof replaced (just before the rainy season hits), but we were blessed by their hearts and gratitude.

The rest of the team went on home visits, personal visits to people with great needs. For each family they visited, a gift box was made of supplies and goods – enough food supplies to last for more than a month! In addition to seeing the blessing that each gift brought to the family, we were able to minister to the family by sharing the gospel of Jesus Christ and offering a blessing over their lives and their homes!

Allison, much to her excitement, had the opportunity to oversee Sharon in the clinic as she removed the stitches from a young girl who recently had a benign mass removed from her leg. This may seem like a minimal opportunity to some, but it made Allison’s day to be able to be a part!

Please pray that will have an effective last day at ASELSI as Phillip teaches his final session and the rest of the team finishes up projects and works with children doing physical therapy. Also pray for a safe return to Guatemala City for our final night in Guatemala.

Picture 1
Our snack in Nebaj
Picture 2
Our lunch in Nebaj
Picture 3
Praying for the congregation

The women in Nebaj took the time to bless us with a special snack and meal!

We apologize for not getting a post up sooner but we have been farther out at Nebaj and did have access to the internet. We had a wonderful 3 days with the beautiful Ixil (pronounce “ee-sheel”) people. We were able to place a roof on a church that had not had one, so they can now meet and the rainy season will not be a challenge. While part of the team worked construction another part worked with the children of the village (approx 150) where the church was located. Pastor Phillip taught pastors and church leaders during the day and was joined by the team at night for the teaching. We saw God do some wonderful things in the lives of the believers who attended the meetings. They are beautiful people who have suffered great under poverty, ignorance, and civil war. God is making a difference in the lives of this wonderful people through the work of ASELSI. It was very obvious that the work in the Quiche province is being transformed by ASELSI sharing the work of God and training His workers. They are more than just praying the Lord send workers to the harvest fields, they are training them and sending them. Continue to pray for us as we are back in Chichicastenango. We want, as much as possible in our time left, to be a blessing to the wonderful team at the ASELSI. They are Heroes of the faith!

Picture 1 ASELSI MAIN BUILDING

Picture 2 John Showing us the many locations throughtout Guatemala that the Educations Extention Programs are taking place

Picture 3 Families in line for the milk program

Picture 4 Some of the pretty flowers on the property

Picture 5 Tim, Gozer and Allison with the children and mothers.

We had a very successful and rewarding day. After a great breakfast we we to ASELSI for a tour of the various ministries. The place amazing and a testament to God's faithfulness and to the hard work of some very dedicated people. We saw the Milk program at work, the health clinic and got a understanding of the depth of the process required to educate christian pastors and leaders for the area. Part of the team worked with the children along with Gozer while they waited for their families to see medical teams or go through the milk program. The construction team worked hard digging what looked like a ditch to transplant shrubs. It was very hard work with picks and shovel. That same team made a house visit providing staples to a single mother and 8 children. We will have much to share upon our return. God is Good! Tonight Pastor Phillip shared the first of 4 sessions with those working on an associates degree from the school. It was a special time with people hungry to lead about the Lord. It is late and we get up in the morning to travel north to Nebaj farther in the highlands (about 6230 feet above sea level) were we will minister for the next several days. Thanks for your prayers.

<img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5062971204859518978" style="FLOAT: left; Our flights were on time and pleasant. We met the team from ASELIA easily and made our way up toward Chichicantenagra. Highway construction slowed down our travel so we arrived later than scheduled so will reschedule some things planed for tommorrow. We are Staying at Manos De Jesus another ministry which has housing and it is a very comfortable place to stay. We had a great meal where we were join by John and Sharon Harvey. After helping with cleanup from dinner we had a group meeting and time of prayer before heading to bed after a long but blessed day. Pray that we will have a successful first full day with God's leading.

Information to inform Your prayers

Below are links to our host's in Guatamala website as well as articles that will let you know more about Guatamala and its people. We had a wonder day as we toured the city yesterday. We started at the Mt. of Olives and a walk the path Christ took. We went to Dominus Flavit (the Lord Wept) and then to the Church of All Nations (Garden of Gethsemene). We had lunch and shopped at an Olive Wood store. Next we went to the church of the Holy Sepulcher the to the Western Wall. (Kotel) Our last stop of the Day was the Garden Tomb where we had communion and a time of prayer. We returned to Hotel for show and diner followed by a farewell party. We will miss our new friend. Today is a free day to shop and tour and we will leave for the airport at 8pm. Keep us in your prayer. We are aware of all the event taking place here and are blessed.

Shabbat Shalom from Jerusalem! It is late Friday afternoon. The streets are quiet, the shops are closed, and we have arrived at our Hotel for a special Shabbat Dinner.

On Thursday we had a "Hands On" Option day. Some of us visited with the survivors of terrorist attacks and then went back to our hotel for dinner. In the evening, as a group we attended a Young Adult Worship Night at the King of Kings Assembly.

This morning, Friday, we began the day after breakfast hearing a Hebrew University Professor, Moshe Sharon. His subject, "The Two Faces of Islam" which was a very informative and thought provoking lecture. His summation: Strengthening Christianity is the only answer to Islam.

From the lecture, we boarded the bus and drove to Yad Vashem, (The Holocaust Museum). From the Museum, we went to a Maale Adumim where we enjoyed lunch and heard a local Israeli explain the community to us. We are looking forward to a pleasant evening - a special time to be in Israel. Our Jerusalem hotel is very comfortable!

On Tuesday, we spent the morning at the ICEJ headquarters learning about current events in Israel and the Covenants of the Bible. Later in the afternoon, we worked in the gardens surrounding Hansen's Hospital. In the evening, we rehearsed a street presentation of "A Wise Man Builds His House Upon the ROCK."

After breakfast and a lecture this morning, we cleaned houses in the Old City. This was an experience that really touched our hearts. In the afternoon, we made our Presentation in the Christian [Arab] section of the Old City where children with sparkling eyes, shinning faces, and happy hearts were seated in the open area surrounded by buildings where they live as families. Many mothers were watching from the windows one, two, and three stories above the street area. We sang together, danced together, and the Drama was a smashing success. We did some face painting and shared candy with the participants. As we made our clean-up, drummers played, and we left feeling we had been in the presence of someone greater than ourselves.

This evening we had free time - experiencing the famous Ben Yehuda Street! We are at the Jackson's Apartment where we are having spaghetti and homemade pecan pie. It is a little taste of Tennessee in the heart of heart of Jerusalem. We have a guest speaker tonight so we can't stay long but have had a refreshing time. Tomorrow we go to the International Christian Embassy to have a tour, hear international speakers and have lunch with some of the staff. In the afternoon we will have a "Hands On" program at the Hansen's Hospital gardening and then back to the Hotel for some time with the other attenders discussing what we have experienced and planning for our day in the old city. Thanks for all your prayers and comments. Our time together today touring the old city was exciting. We made our way from one side to the other. We had a time of worship and prayer at the site of the pool of Bethesda (John 5:2)

Blessings and Pray for the peace of Israel. Our scripture has been Isaiah 40:1-2. We have all arrived in what was a very uneventful trip. Our flight from Newark was only 9 1/2 hours. We were greeted at the airport by Dr. and Mrs. Jackson. We spent the afternoon enjoying the sunshine at the pools at our hotel (Ma’ale Hachamisha on the Kibbutz of the same name). We had dinner and a meeting with the others we will be serving with on the trip. They come from around the globe… New Zealand, Australia, Finland, South Africa and of course the United States.
